Energy-saving fans: High efficieny and multifarious functionality

Energy-saving fans based on the energy-saving motor (ESM) are in demand for many applications today. This especially applies to devices with a high duty cycle, such as air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. Expertise is needed to lower energy consumption considerably, both for the aerodynamic design of the rotor, blade and housing as well as for the development of energy-saving motors that work very efficiently.

Energy-saving fans and energy-saving motors were developed for use in refrigerated and freezer cases. Depending on the fan design (axial, centrifugal, diagonal), these fans are available in various sizes with diameters from 130 to 300 mm.

The energy-saving motor represents environmentally friendly efficiency

Energy-saving fan with aerodynamically optimised plastic rotor.

Due to the aerodynamically optimised plastic rotor, energy-saving motors (ESM) run more quietly and also make do without any environmentally damaging varnish. Energy-saving motors (ESM) achieve a motor efficiency of more than 65 %, a figure more than three times higher than conventional shaded-pole motors. The input power was often able to be reduced to less than a fifth of previous values in real-world applications, since shaded-pole motors usually are not operated at their maximum efficiency. This is how this investment pays for itself within a very short period. High efficiency also results due to lower intrinsic heating during operation, which dissipates less heat into the environment. Energy-saving motors (ESM) offer outputs between 5 and 35 W, operate with 230 V or 115 V supply voltage and provide additional options such as an automatic decrease to a second working speed at night.

Energy efficient iQ-motor for 1:1 replacement.

The compact design of energy-saving fans permits space-saving and, above all, simple installation. To reduce installation effort even further, these energy-saving fans can be purchased on request as ready-to-install modules. Existing applications can also be upgraded without problems. For this case, ebm-papst offers energy-efficient iQ motors, which are compatible with existing shaded-pole motors and which have a high efficiency of up to 65 % and the same installation dimensions, allowing a straightforward 1:1 mechanical exchange. Axial impellers with a diameter of 154 to 254 mm can be fitted in the same way on the iQ motor to create an energy-efficient solution. The intelligent electronics regulate voltage fluctuations so that the speed remains constant. Many renowned supermarket chains are already making use of this environmentally and economically beneficial option for 1:1 replacement.

The existing series of energy-saving fans and energy-saving motors has been expanded with additional versions and functions to meet new market demands:

Attachable interface module for the energy-saving fan (ESM+)

With an attachable interface module (ESM+), the energy-saving motor can quickly be expanded by adding a 0-10 VDC control input and a +10 V voltage output (10 V, max. 1.1 mA). Thus the energy-saving motor provides a direct power supply for an external pressure or temperature sensor, for example. An additional, external power supply is not necessary. In addition, the ESM+ interface module offers a speed signal for speed monitoring.

Energy-saving fan for low voltage 24 VDC

For refrigerated cases with low voltage LED lighting system, energy-saving fans suitable for 24 VDC low voltage are available. This version of the ESM offers an integrated 0-10 VDC control input for a linear closed-loop speed control and a speed signal for speed monitoring. No interface module is needed for this.

Programming the rotational speed of the energy-saving motor using a handheld operating device

With this programming unit, which was specially designed for use in manufacturing and field service, the two default speed steps for the energy-saving fans can easily be reprogrammed with the help of a user-friendly navigation menu. An automatic shutoff function provides longer battery life. Software updates can be downloaded easily using a mini-USB plug. Batteries, programming cables and operating instructions are included in the standard scope of delivery.

These extensions and functions of the existing energy-saving motor series allow demand-oriented control of the complete installation, which increases the installation's overall efficiency even more. The energy-saving fans are designed for long, maintenance-free operation. Depending on environmental conditions, the service life usually exceeds 60,000 hours. Energy-saving fans made of "epylen" wood/plastic composite material

To attain additional energy savings during production, for the first time, energy-saving fans made of "epylen", a wood/plastic composite material have been developed, an absolute innovation in the fan area. In doing so, cautious use has been made of the available resources, i.e. ever smaller amounts of non-renewable resources are used and from these, high-quality and durable products are produced. A wide variety of requirements exist for the raw materials themselves. They are to be not only renewable, but also produced in an environmentally responsible manner, thus without using fertilisers or pesticides, and wherever possible in mixed crops and small production units.
